Comets And The Bronze Age Collapse
 http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/bronze.html

Earth has been periodically pelleted with comet fragments throughout the Holocene period. The evidence for the break-up of a large (> 50 km), short period (approximately 3.3 years), Earth-orbit-crossing comet is substantial and should be considered as hard as anything a trowel might turn up. What astronomical information cannot convey is the actual effect these periodic bombardment episodes had on human culture; only further digging and sifting will illuminate that aspect.

There's also a part two to this article: A Nickel Pickle:

There is though, another agent which could destroy civilization and do great harm to the environment, a large consignment of elements from space. Such deliveries are not as uncommon as was previously thought, particularly during the past twelve thousand years. Much evidence suggests that humanity witnessed, and was affected by, the break-up of a very large comet over this time period.

Inconsistencies In Published Neanderthal Genomic DNA Sequences
 http://genetics.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request...

This is a research article evaluating data from two recent (2006) publications of portions of the Neanderthal genome sequence. The authors conclude that: "these studies show that they are not consistent with each other and point to serious problems with the data quality in one of the studies, possibly due to modern human DNA contaminants and/or a high rate of sequencing errors". Which just goes to show that you shouldn't believe everything you read :eggplant:

Space-Based Solar Cells Could Power Entire Earth
 http://inventorspot.com/articles/spacebased_solar_...

Gigantic satellites orbiting the Earth, equipped with solar cells, could collect enough energy from the sun every year to power the world seven times over. Beaming the energy down to Earth in the form of microwaves or a laser, the satellites would provide energy which would be gathered in antennas on the ground and then converted to electricity.

Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Already Beyond Worst Case Scenario
 http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/10/09/asia/AS-...

Strong worldwide economic growth has accelerated the level of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere to a dangerous threshold scientists had not expected for another decade, according to a leading Australian climate change expert.

Gamma Ray Delay May Be Sign Of 'New Physics'
 http://www.yubanet.com/artman/publish/article_6658...

Delayed gamma rays from deep space may provide the first evidence for physics beyond current theories.

The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescope found that high-energy photons of gamma radiation from a distant galaxy arrived at Earth four minutes after lower-energy photons, although they were apparently emitted at the same time. If correct, that would contradict Einstein's theory of relativity, which says that all photons (particles of light) must move at the speed of light.

US Scientist On The Verge Of Creating Artificial Life
 http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5hI3FcpEMmrHSmx...

The chromosome which Venter and his team has created is known as Mycoplasma laboratorium and, in the final step of the process, will be transplanted into a living cell where it should "take control," effectively becoming a new life form.

I'll post followup papers and articles as/when they appear. But Ima say right now that it's a shame that someone had to go link this exciting new science to fuking global warming in the article. Stuff like this should be funded and be newsworthy on it's own merit.

Aliens Forced Americans Out From The Moon
 http://english.pravda.ru/science/mysteries/03-10-2...

One of Russia's central television channels, RTR, has recently aired a documentary about US astronauts who allegedly came across extraterrestrial civilizations. The film showed Russian ufologist Vladimir Azhazha and astronomer Yevgeny Arsyukhin telling that expeditions to the Moon launched within 1969-1972 allegedly came across UFOs.

The US Has Massive Oil Reserves
 http://www.americanfreepress.net/html/u_s__has_mas...

There is an estimated 2 trillion barrels of oil buried beneath parts of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Geologists, petroleum companies and the federal government have known about these massive deposits for nearly a century... Called "oil shale" or "shale oil" much of it cannot be recovered with current technology due to the costly processing involved and the depth of the deposits buried beneath the Rocky Mountains.

Still, if only half can be extracted, scientists believe the amount is nearly triple the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia.

Ice Age Defrosted By Warming Ocean, Not Rise In CO2
 http://scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?articleI...

Ice cores drawn from Antarctica and Greenland have shown that carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere began to rise at roughly the same time as the vast ice sheets began to melt. But it remained unclear exactly which came first: melting ice and warming seas released more CO2 or more CO2 led to melting ice and warming seas.

Shifting Targets: The US Administration's Plan For Iran
 http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/10/08/0710...

In a series of public statements in recent months, President Bush and members of his Administration have redefined the war in Iraq, to an increasing degree, as a strategic battle between the United States and Iran...

Very interesting comment article. Don't miss.
