Described as the last of the old masters and the first of the moderns, Francisco Goya was a Spanish court painter who died in 1828.

Following chronic illness which left him deaf, he because increasingly withdrawn and introspective, and it was during the subsequent period between 1820 and 1824 that he created a series of disturbing murals within his own home that became collectively known as The Black Paintings.
